"There are always flowers for those who want to see them" — Henri Matisse
A selection of recent paintings and studies
Born in 1962, Carl Preller matriculated from Grey College High School and obtained a Master Degree in Political Science from the University of the Free State. He lived and worked in Pretoria for most of his life before relocating to the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus, Vermont in late 2021.
Surrounded by creative influences throughout his life, Carl's interest in art started as a child, inspired by a great aunt who was a talented artist. It was only later in life that Carl took up watercolour painting as a hobby. His attendance of a Fynbos art course in Stellenbosch in 2018 triggered him to start painting again, followed by enrollment in art classes with Fine Arts Teacher Annelise Bowker at the Tina Skukan Gallery in Pretoria from 2019–2021.
Carl's primary focus is watercolour, with subjects including flowers, town scenes, buildings, and increasingly, figure studies. He draws inspiration from his travels, his love of gardening, and the natural beauty surrounding him. His work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Tina Skukan Gallery, Hermanus Art Circle exhibitions at the Whale House Museum, the Hermanus FynArts Festival, and Kalfiefees.
